Epidural analgesia during child birth. Epidural analgesia provides rapid pain relief in most cases. It is more effective than opioids and other common modalities of analgesia in childbirth. Epidurals during childbirth are the most commonly used analgesia in this situation. It was found that an epidural bolus administered at large volumes, (and high injection pressures) quickly filled the epidural space therefore achieving optimum pain relief.
Programmable Intermittent Epidural Bolus (PIEB) is a method where a bolus is delivered at fixed intervals.
On occasions, a patient will experience breakthrough pain and may demand an epidural bolus, Patient Controlled Epidural Analgesia (PCEA).
